Quan has de fer servir in, on i at?

L'objectiu és triar amb seguretat in, on o at quan parles de temps en anglès. La idea bàsica és aquesta:

in s'utilitza amb períodes amplis.
on s'utilitza amb dies i dates.
at s'utilitza amb hores i moments concrets.

Aquesta regla resol molts casos, però hi ha expressions que convé aprendre com a blocs sencers.

In per a períodes amplis

Fes servir in amb mesos, anys, estacions, parts generals del dia i períodes de temps que comencen des d'ara.

My birthday is in July.: El meu aniversari és al juliol.
She was born in 2001.: Va néixer l'any 2001.
We travel in summer.: Viatgem a l'estiu.
I study in the morning.: Estudio al matí.
They usually talk in the evening.: Normalment parlen al vespre.
The bus will arrive in ten minutes.: L'autobús arribarà d'aquí a deu minuts.

Amb parts del dia, la forma normal és in the morning, in the afternoon i in the evening.

Let's meet in the afternoon.: Quedem a la tarda.
He reads in the evening.: Llegeix al vespre.

També diem in the holidays o, més sovint, during the summer holidays per parlar d'un període de vacances.

On per a dies i dates

Fes servir on amb dies de la setmana, dates i combinacions d'un dia amb una part del dia.

The meeting is on Monday.: La reunió és dilluns.
Our exam is on Friday.: El nostre examen és divendres.
The shop is closed on 12 August.: La botiga és tancada el 12 d'agost.
We leave on Monday morning.: Marxem dilluns al matí.
She called me on Tuesday evening.: Em va trucar dimarts al vespre.

La diferència és important:

in the morning: al matí en general.
on Monday morning: dilluns al matí, un dia concret.

At per a hores i moments puntuals

Fes servir at amb hores, moments molt precisos i algunes expressions fixes.

The train leaves at 7 o'clock.: El tren surt a les set.
The film starts at 8 PM.: La pel·lícula comença a les vuit del vespre.
Lunch is at noon.: El dinar és al migdia.
The party ended at midnight.: La festa va acabar a mitjanit.
Please arrive at 9:30.: Si us plau, arriba a dos quarts de deu.

Amb night, l'expressió habitual per a una rutina o un fet general és at night:

I can't sleep at night.: No puc dormir de nit.
Owls hunt at night.: Els mussols cacen de nit.

In the night pot aparèixer quan parlem d'un fet concret que va passar durant una nit, especialment en anglès britànic:

She woke up in the night.: Es va despertar durant la nit.

Expressions que sovint creen confusió

On time i in time

Les dues expressions parlen d'arribar o acabar, però no volen dir exactament el mateix.

on time vol dir puntual, segons l'horari previst.
- The train arrived on time.: El tren va arribar puntual.
- Please hand in the report on time.: Si us plau, lliura l'informe dins del termini previst.
in time vol dir abans que sigui massa tard.
- We got to the airport in time for our flight.: Vam arribar a l'aeroport a temps per agafar el vol.
- He arrived just in time.: Va arribar just a temps.

Si una classe comença a les nou i hi arribes a les nou, hi arribes on time. Si arribes corrents un minut abans que tanquin la porta, hi arribes in time.

At the weekend i on the weekend

Totes dues formes són correctes:

at the weekend és habitual en anglès britànic.
- I usually relax at the weekend.: Normalment descanso el cap de setmana.
on the weekend és habitual en anglès americà.
- I usually relax on the weekend.: Normalment descanso el cap de setmana.

Tria la varietat que estiguis aprenent i mantén-la dins del mateix text.

Altres blocs útils

at the moment: en aquest moment.
- I'm busy at the moment.: Ara mateix estic ocupat.
at present: actualment, en aquest moment.
- At present, the office is closed.: Actualment, l'oficina és tancada.
in the past: en el passat.
- People wrote more letters in the past.: En el passat la gent escrivia més cartes.
at the beginning of the film: al començament de la pel·lícula.
- At the beginning of the film, nobody speaks.: Al començament de la pel·lícula, ningú no parla.

Errors habituals i com evitar-los

No tradueixis automàticament la preposició catalana. Mira quin tipus de temps expressa la frase en anglès.

No diguis I was born at 1998. Digues I was born in 1998. perquè un any és un període.
No diguis The class is on the morning. Digues The class is in the morning. perquè parlem d'un matí en general.
No diguis Let's meet at Sunday morning. Digues Let's meet on Sunday morning. perquè és un dia concret.
No diguis The film starts in 8 PM. Digues The film starts at 8 PM. perquè és una hora exacta.
No confonguis at night amb in the evening. In the evening sol referir-se al vespre; at night, a la nit.

Un bon truc és preguntar-te si parles d'un contenidor de temps ampli, d'un dia o d'un punt concret: in, on o at.

I'll call you in the evening.: Et trucaré al vespre.
The meeting is on Monday.: La reunió és dilluns.
My birthday is in July.: El meu aniversari és al juliol.
The train leaves at 7 o'clock.: El tren surt a les set.
We arrived just in time for the concert.: Vam arribar just a temps per al concert.
The report was finished on time.: L'informe es va acabar puntualment, dins del termini previst.
En anglès britànic: I visit my grandparents at the weekend.: Visito els avis el cap de setmana.
En anglès americà: I visit my grandparents on the weekend.: Visito els avis el cap de setmana.
She starts her new job on Tuesday morning.: Comença la feina nova dimarts al matí.
The alarm rang in the night.: L'alarma va sonar durant la nit.
